"Out of the bubble, into your soul"

It took me quite some time to find an isolated spot in the world where I could search within the true meaning of yoga for me as a student and teacher. Last summer I shared weeklong practice with a great group of teachers at magical spot in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. Yoga, nature, adventure, great food; I was in paradise.

So, why does it take a remote location to find bliss in your yoga practice?

It’s simple, your body and mind need to be outside of the everyday capsule you live in, you have to allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and at the same time open up to new experiences and emotions. That’s when enlightenment arrives, when without reservations you give yourself the gift of personal freedom.

A yoga retreat will allow you to go deeper into your poses. Just like a surgeon opens a cavity and meticulously pays attention to every detail of the anatomy, a teacher during a retreat will have the time to go into detail during asanas and work with students in those poses or areas that need further attention.

I’m not expecting my teachers to be surgeons but when it comes to yoga I want them to scrub in and grab the scalpel.

The environment where you will spend a week is quite important. The location must be comfortable and provide the amenities that your body needs to relax and let go. Food is a key element; a body must be well nourished and hydrated before and after each practice. It doesn’t have to be all yoga the entire time; outdoor activities and exploring the surrounding of your retreat center will allow you to connect with nature and other cultures.

Introduce my eyes, taste buds and body to new experiences and you will find me hanging from palm trees.

Your overall experience should not feel like any other yoga class you took on a random day during your routine. You want to physically feel the intensity of your weeklong practice as well as the reflection in your overall wellbeing.

Blue Osa Yoga Resort and Spa offered me the serenity and tranquility to find my inner self. The secluded beach jungle location was pure energy in motion, as the macaws flew in front of my eyes the waves crashed at my feet, there was no room for anything else other than transformation.

If you would like experience the magic of Blue Osa you can join us for Flow, Align & Restore Yoga Retreat from the 27th of July to the 3rd of August.

Meet Melanie Lighty RYT250

Melanie began her yoga practice seven years ago as a way to release stress and tension from a fast-paced, high stress job.  Her desire is to help lead others down this path with the mind, body and spiritual connection yoga brings to light.  Melanie received her teacher training from the Mt. Nittany Institute of Natural Health in 2010.

Her teaching style has been influenced by her teachers, past experiences and a goal to help each student create their own version of what yoga means to them with a sense of humor and the mindset of a beginner.   She is also the mother to a peppy Corgie/ Shiba Inu mix, Javier.  Besides her love of yoga, Melanie enjoys spending her spare time running, hiking, biking, traveling and exploring!

A little about me - Alain Benitez RYT200

I was drawn into yoga by a headstand but it just took a class to realize there was more to yoga than that. I’ve been practicing for over 5 years and teaching for the past two years. My teaching is based on the sequences by Baron Baptiste and the incorporation of others styles such as Anusara, Ashtanga and Iyengar. The combination of alignment and breath with an egoless practice is key for safety and growth. Born in the Caribbean, a lover of winter and snow but with hot breaks vacationing in the tropics.

Meet John Wylie RYT200!

I'm very excited to welcome John Wylie RYT200 to our retreat team. John has been a true inspiration as a teacher and taken my personal practice to the next level.

John Wylie tells us more about himself:

"I am RYT – 200 certified under Bill Raup at Power Yoga Works in 2007. I have also done teacher training with Shiva Rea at Kripalu and I am currently studying Iyengar with John White in Philadelphia. I have been practicing yoga for about 12 years and teaching for three. I love the flow and I think of my style of teaching as “Flowing into Form, then freezing in Stillness and into Freedom!” I am also an ex-martial artist, having studied Muji-Shin Te under Sensei Thomas Coleman for approximately 20 years. I love the beach at any time and I love the sun."
